Best is yet to come in doing Business with Haiti

Tewarie urged AMCHAM to jump into the Haitian market ". . . while it is still early to . . . take advantage of . . . potentially exponential growth in the years ahead" Already Korean and American companies are exploiting the burgeoning Haitian economy he added.

Tewarie said investment opportunities are at their peak in tourism, hospitality, transportation, construction, and manufacturing sectors. He also disabused the idea Haiti is just about dire poverty. Twenty percent of the island's population holds great wealth with plenty of disposable income.

In the midst of talk about Haiti's exciting potential as an emerging market, Tewarie barely made mention of Haiti's sanitation system and its inadequacy, particularly in reference to the cholera epidemic. Instead he returned to the theme of duty-free access and lack thereof for countries to export their goods to Haiti. In contrast Haiti gets special treatment to import its goods to the U.S.

One prediction Tewarie made regarding the Presidential election later in October was balloting at the polls would be relatively peaceful and to anticipate "The investment climate and economy are likely to strengthen"
