The government of Canada (GOC) has warned their citizens to ". . . exercise a high degree of caution due to high crime rates . . . and ongoing political tensions." Some neighborhoods to avoid are: Martissant, Carrefour, Bel Air, and Cite Soleil, most dangerous of all.

The GOC has a policy should a crisis occur that necessitates escaping to a safe locale. It is a proactive measure, because local police departments don't have enough manpower to answer calls for help quickly enough. The GOC says security is precarious and not at all predictable. They urge visitors not to venture forth after skies darken. Crime is especially active in urban centers such as Port-au-Prince, an area dominated by gangs.

The latest type of crime activity according to a travel advisory, released by the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, is armed robberies, occurring after foreign travelers have left Toussaint Louverture Airport. Typically, criminals use motorbikes to tail victims' vehicles, robbing them of money, credit cards, jewelry, and other valuables. The U.S. Embassy encourages arriving travelers to arrange for a friend, relative, or business colleague to pick them up before the thieves can target them.
