A dog's diet would have to include at least 50% of grains that should be boiled or steamed. The types of food that dog owners should always avoid feeding their dog with are chocolates, soft bones, raw meat, raw liver, raw fish, raw eggs, nuts, raisins, grapes, and onions. Milk is alright but should not substitute to that of water. Table scraps is also okay as long as it only makes up 10% of the dog's daily diet. For pregnant canines, a dose of calcium is essential.

Dog owners should make sure not to over feed their dogs as these could cause obesity and depression. Dog treats should also be regulated on a time interval. In addition, dog owners should follow certain guidelines when feeding their dogs. First is when dealing with puppies, they should feed them in a quite area where they could be alone while eating, as well as avoid feeding them chicken or fish bones as they might choke on these. Second is to make sure that the dog's water bowl is clean and always with fresh water. Third is to serve dogs food that is of warm or of normal temperature and make sure to not leave left-overs on their bowls. And lastly, they should avoid feeding dogs from the table.
