Haiti National Police and MINUSTAH Vetting Process

Haiti National Police spokesman Frantz Lerebours said that the police officers will be fired for various offences such as corruption, dereliction of duty, human rights violations and insubordination, among others. The vetting report said that some police officers are accused of corruption because of the fact that they live a lifestyle that is unreasonable for the amount of salary they get.

Moreover, Lerebours lamented that the vetting report was leaked to the press. He said that the authorities were meaning to directly approach the involved officers first before announcing the issue to the press. However, the media have already found out about the vetting report. Lerebours said that the leak can only worsen the problem, which could lead to the destabilization of the institution. Lerebous expressed concern that the press revealed about the HNP removing the involved police officers from its payroll list before the latter can receive the information properly. The spokesman though made it clear that not everyone in the list was dismissed for corruption. Others were due to different offenses.

MINUSTAH prepared and submitted the report after conducting a through investigation and assessment of Haiti National Police and all its officers. It aims to make sure that all police officers in the country are doing their job properly.
