We have the date for the presidential election in Haiti. It is scheduled for October 9, 2016, according to President Jocelerme Privert. The date was revealed following a direct question from Dominican President Danilo Medina to Privert on Saturday during a bilateral meeting at the summit of the ACS in Havana: "When is that elections will take place in Haiti?". According to the Haitian President, "Elections must take place on October 9, according to all available information".

However a very important question was not asked: With whom?

The meeting that took place between Michel Martelly and Danilo Medina yesterday came after protests by Dominican merchants in Dajabon to close the market serving Haitian merchants following the ban or road transportation of 23 Dominican products. The retailers organizations had called for a boycott on trade between Haiti and Dominican Republic until the Haitian government reverses its decision.

Being in a position of weakness and not able to answer effectively to the demand of the population who has been protesting, setting fire on public buildings, etc.., the Martelly-Paul government has decided to forget about what ever is left in term of character, dignity or prestige as President Martelly went crawling to Danilo Medina to ask for forgiveness and to promise that the Haitian government is willing to eat its decision in regard to the 23 Dominican products.

The Dominican authority has made the decision to close all its consulates in Haiti following the incident that took place recently where some people entered one of their consulates in Port-au-Prince and removed their flag. The Dominican government wants that the Haitian government to give them full guarantee that similar incidents will not take place before they open their consulates.

On the other hand, Castillo Seman from Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), wants every single Dominican currently living in Haiti to pack their bags and return to the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) has become very influential in the current government. Their influence on the issue of immigration has strengthened in the administrations of former President Leonel Fernandez and in the current administration of President Danilo Medina.

I wish I coud hear what the two leaders were talking about. Dominican President Danilo Medina and Haitian President Michel Martelly met in Caracas for the Petrocaribe energy cooperation and ALBA summit. They probably talked about everything but the effect of the recent Dominican court ruling that could strip citizenship from people of Haitian descent.

On Tuesday, November 28, 2013 Dominican President Danilo Medina met at the Dominican National Palace all its forces, including: senior defense, enforcement and security officials, officials of the army and police, officials charged with protecting national security and the border. The meeting was to develop a strategy to deal with Haiti.

On Friday, November 29, 2013 the Dominican government, President Danilo Medina, called their intelligence agencies and state security and ordered them to do whatever is in their power to avoid any confrontation at the border between Haiti and Dominican Republic.

Danilo Medina further instructed the Dominican Armed Forces to avoid excess force.

According to the Dominican authority, he does not want their action to affect the image of the of the Dominican Republic in the world.

Dominican Media reported that the Haitian President Michel Martelly admitted that he lied over poultry products from the Dominican Republic.

According to Dominicantoday.com, Dominican President President Danilo Medina, during a meeting held on Sunday(6/30/13) with Michell Martelly and Haiti Foreign minister Pierre-Richard Casimir, the Haitian leader admitted that poultry products from the Dominican Republic are of good quality and that the Haitian ban was strictly economic.

The meeting was held during the summit of the Petrocaribe member nations in Nicaragua where the Haitian Government said that his country loses around $300 million in unpaid tax revenue due to chicken and eggs import from the Dominican Republic

The governments of Haiti (GOH) and Dominican Republic (DR) have partnered for the "Re-greening DR-Haiti" reforestation movement. The campaign kicked off at World Environment Day in North East Department, Ouanaminthe. Presidents Martelly of GOH and Danilo Medina of DR planted seeds to demonstrate their intent to reach a tree canopy of 27% by 2020. Currently, green coverage amounts to only 2% of Hispaniola Island. The GOH and DR want to increase it to 4% by 2017.

Martelly noted "the last national afforestation campaign dates back to 1980 . . ." He said in over three decades no attempt has been made to reforest Hispaniola. But he reported 400,000-plus seed plantings have occurred in several departments throughout Haiti in the last six weeks. Danilo Medina also reported 6 million-plus seed plantings have occurred in DR.

According to Haiti Press Network, Dominican President Danilo Medina said this week that he would take "drastic measures" to resolve the issue of the ban on Dominican chickens and eggs by the Haitian government. He added that there are no valid reason for the ban noting that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has supported their claim that there was no bird flu in the Dominican Republic.

Danilo Medina denounced the special interests behind the actions taken by Haiti and concluded that they need to find solutions to not depend on the Haitian market."

The Martelly-Lamothe administration of Haiti have recently been meeting and trying to collaborate with other countries, especially with its neighbors for mutual economic development and international cooperation. In addition, Haiti has been participating and joining in different international organizations such as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) where the country is an active full member.

To expand Haiti's international relations, the government has been in negotiation with the Dominican Republic for a Free Trade Agreement. This aims to promote regional development through open trade of goods and services between the two nations. With the DR's newly-elected President Danilo Medina, it appears that this agreement is a great probability.
