Haiti dialogue under the auspices of Episcopal Conference

Newly appointed Haitian Cardinal, Chibly Langlois, attended the meeting as Pope Francis's envoy. It is the pontiff's mission to focus on the under-represented of Haiti, and Cardinal Langlois will advocate on behalf of them. Civil society representatives and independent observers were also on hand.

Martelly emphasized to Parliament they must act immediately to galvanize their offices to make accessible government resources for Haitian citizens. He added, "the key for us now is our ability to talk . . . to resolve our differences and think for the greater good of the Haitian nation." Cardinal Langlois emphasized transformation of the Republic would be a core concern of the talks, and bargaining must hammer out lasting solutions.

Edmonde Beauzil, Senator of Centre Department, representing the political factions, said all participaants must commit to real change, and there is no excuse for not accomplishing it. Ouest Department Senator, Steven Benoit, spoke for Parliament and implored opposition party, Fanmi Lavalas, to participate in the dialogue.

At the conclusion of the meeting, political parties, and Parliament and Executive branches had signed a protocol mediation, certified by a notary. Martelly asked all participants to work " . . . to modernize the Haitian political landscape and consolidate democracy."
