Livres en Folie, the biggest book fair in Haiti

Livres en Folie is definitely an annual madness in Haiti. This year the madness seems to be even greater.

Livres en Folie is an idea that came to life in 1995, based on the initiative of UNIBANK and Le Nouvelliste newspaper. We can in all confidence say that this annual Book Fair event in Haiti is one of the biggest cultural events in the country.

The event has moved from two previous location to finally land at the Parc Historique de la Canne à Sucre this year. It started as a small event at the beginning and at that time La Promenade in Petion-Ville was more that adequate to handle it. As "Livres en Folie" grew in reputation, volume, so was its popularity. With the passing of time, it was obvious that the original location was inadequate. The next location of Livres en Folie became Cercle Bellevue in Bourdon. Due to yet increase popularity, the organizers last year decided to bring it to Parc Historique de la Canne à Sucre at Tabarre.

What does Livres en Folie does for the Haitian culture?
1) It promotes book writing since it encourages Haitian writers to produce more to benefit from the event
2) The buyer finds at Livres en Folie a real bargain. Some of the books are marked down close to 50%.

What does bring so many people in one place in Haiti where the subject is book and reading.

Doesn't the news report otherwise.

From what I have been hearing in the news, close 80 percent of the Haitian population is illiterate.

So what is going on Haiti.

In the book fair "Livres en Folie" I did not see the presence of Edwidge Danticat.

I was there but dod not see her.

I also have a critic for "Livres en Folie".

I feel that there was a lack preparation for something like this. These people know that many people were going to attend; they did not do anything to accommodate them.

This is my last participation in Livres en Folie until it it

The 19th Edition of Livres en Folie this year at the Historical Sugarcane Park in Tabarre had a record of 129 authors participating.

The attendance of the population increased again.

Is there a bigger place in Haiti that the organizers could consider to hold the event next year?

I think this event is going to fall as a result of its own
