Staying in Touch with Families through the Internet

How to keep a relationship affected by distance, marriage, separation going

Families grow up together, but inevitably marriage and careers can put great distances between parents and their children. Grandparents want to see and hear how their grandchildren are doing. And grandchildren need to know who their grandparents are, begin learning the family history, and develop relationships with their extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In the past, postal mail and long-distance telephone service have kept us connected. Now we have the Internet, email, digital cameras, and web cams to provide us with frequent opportunities to stay in touch.

For elderly people, who feel overwhelmed by technology, consider gifting them MSN TV. This simple utility accesses the Internet through their television. By turning the TV set on, they can surf the web, send and receive emails, photos, e-cards, e-vites, and other online forms of communication.

Many online options exist for communicating with family. If you're not a great email writer, upload photos of family activities, share bits of information pulled off the web, and play online games together.

Another way relatives can keep up with each other is through a family website. Many website developers offer templates with themes designed for different users' purposes. The sites are a snap to build and inexpensive to maintain. Family members can log on and see what everyone else is up to.

Time and distance between families no longer needs to interfere with feeling connected. By going online and sharing milestones of you and your growing family's lives, you can forge stronger bonds between all generations.
