Youth Electoral Participation Awareness in Haiti

The two agencies, such as the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) and its partner United Nations Development Program (UNDP), both engaged in ensuring a fair election process in Haiti have put much emphasis on the active participation of country's youth force in the electoral process. During the first week of August, in a measure to transform the youths to active citizens, a series of training process was undertaken for a first group of 140 individuals. They were taught about the democracy and the importance of a fair and peaceful election, corruptions and electoral laws, how to cast a vote, are only some to name. These youths will again train their peers so that they can take an active part in the electoral process.

In a paradoxical situation where the lawmakers have consistently become lawbreakers, the country desperately needs some young leaders who personify energy, enthusiasm, morality, and diligence. Young people have different perspectives and a host of different ideas. As per Richardson Dumel, the CEP Communications Director, the young people should air their voice for the welfare of the state and every vote cast must reflect the sovereign will of the Haitian people and the Provisional Electoral Council guarantees a seamless environment to achieve that. As per Katyna Argueta, the acting Senior Director of the UNDP, youth with a share of 50% of the population, should be a major component in the political life in Haiti and it deserves its prominence in social and political lives.

We may recall that before the 2010 presidential and legislative elections, a study conducted by Henriette Lunde and Ketty Luzincourt in July 2010, had revealed that the majority of the participants (most of them were young people with different educational and socio-economic backgrounds) saw politics as practiced in Haiti as a dirty game and expected politicians to be corrupt and to have achieved power through influence rather than ability.
