John Kerry in Haiti to Discuss Legislative & Presidential Elections

On Tuesday, October 6, 2015, the outgoing Haitian President Mr. Michel Joseph Martelly welcomed the U.S Secretary of State John Kerry at the National Palace while Mr. Kerry stopped at the Haitian capital at President Martelly's invitation on his way back from a conference in Chile, to discuss preparations for the country's upcoming election on October 25, 2015 and encourage Haitian people to refrain from violent acts that may disrupt the process of a free and fair election.

In some districts, during the legislative elections held on August 9, the percentage of polling was reported to be less than the expectation; two people were killed amid violence, fourteen candidates who ran in the Haiti's first-round legislative elections were disqualified by the state election officials following violent disturbances at voting stations. However, the Organization of American States (OAS) who is actively watching and monitoring the election had said that the irregularities were not enough to invalidate the overall results.

Before his arrival to Haiti, the Secretary of the State had mentioned in his official Twitter account about the Haitian President's invitation to Haiti and his plan to meet top Haitian officials and some political candidates during his brief stopover. After the meeting with the Haitian President Martelly, Kerry said he had held a positive and productive meeting about the October 25 election. He had appealed to all the Haitians that the country needs a legitimate, representative governing institution and that would never come without a free and fair election. He had said that the U.S and the rest of the international community are watching expectantly to witness a fair and peaceful election on October 25. President Martelly thanked US President Barrack Obama and his administration for their continuing solidarity with the Haitian people. The US has provided more than $30 million to support the Haitian elections this year: $28.8 million through USAID and $2.8 million for promoting electoral security and communications and logistics capabilities.
