Haiti Has developed a National Security Plan, Will it solve crime?

Accompanied with the Superior Council of the National Police last Tuesday, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe appeared before the Permanent Commission of Justice and Public Security of the Chamber of Deputies to discuss a national security plan for Haiti.

What does that mean?

There have been many of such meetings in the past why people in Haiti continues to be victims of violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide, rape, and kidnapping!

According to Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe: "Ensuring security in the country is a priority of the Government". He stated that he had a meeting with the Superior Council of the National Police and they have come to the two following agreements:

First: To redouble their efforts in terms of basic security called the operation 'Boukle potoprens' which was for Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas

Second: The police to have a more pronounced presence in the street.

How will that contribute to the long-Term security solution in Haiti? This looks more like a patch to me

Crime remains a persistent danger in Haiti. While the capabilities of the Haitian National Police have improved, its chronic incapacity to resolve crime has contributed to the ongoing unsecurity threat in Haiti.

So until things improve in Haiti, your best defense is protection. Here are some tips to protect yourself in Haiti:

"PreKosyo Pa Kapon"

Take common-sense precautions and avoid any event where crowds may congregate.

- Avoid some areas in Port-au-Prince, specially at night such as downtown Port-au-Prince, Cite Soleil, Martissant, Carrefour, Croix Des Bouquets,

- Keep valuables well hidden and keep doors and windows in homes and vehicles closed and locked.

- avoid all night-time travel due to poor road conditions

- Remain alert when entering and exiting banks, as criminals often watch and subsequently attack bank customers. Do not withdraw large amounts of cash

- Be alert when arriving from another country as you might be targeted for assaults or robberies.

Security has always been a topic in Haiti.

You forgot to mention (in your list of areas to avoid at night) Petion-ville, Laboule, Thomassin, Turgeau, and Route des Freres.

Haiti`s security cannot be laid on the shoulders of the national Police alone.

Every law abiding Haitian citizen has his or her own responsibilty towards the security issue.
