Regine Godefroy, Resigns, 2nd Cabinet Member Out In 2 Days

The current Martelly-Lamothe government of Haiti is not only facing external problems of Haitian economy as a whole but is also dealing internal instability. The day after the resignation of Economy and Finance Minister, Marie Carmelle Jean-Marie, the Martelly-Lamothe government faced a second blow when it lost its second woman minister, Regine Godefroy. Godefroy held the post of Minister of Communication for Haiti and was installed in office on January 24, 2013.

Radio Tele-Metropole and Radio Tele-Kiskeya (both owned privately) cited and unnamed source and said that the Communication Minister had quit her post but none of the outlets ever mentioned the reason behind this resignation. Godefroy was installed in office after the second shakeup from Laurent Lamothe ever since he became Prime Minister of Haiti in May 2012. Before assuming the post of Communication Minister, Godefroy was the Director of Haitian Postal Service.

The Martelly-Lamothe government did not show any immediate response for this 2nd resignation which came just the day after Marie Carmelle's resignation. It is being reported by radio stations that Marie Carmelle, previous Economy and Finance Minister, resigned because of lack of support from the colleagues to her attempts to add transparency to the office she held.

The Martelly-Lamothe is currently dealing with corruption allegations and these back-to-back resignations raise serious questions about the government's activities. However, Prime Minister Lamothe has responded to these allegations and issued a statement in which he said that graft will not be tolerated by the government. Politics says a lot but time speaks the truth!
