Are the armed men running all over Haiti really demobilized soldiers?

The worry I have in my heart is more than words can express. I am deeply troubled by something that every Haitian who is protected by the constitution should be fretting about. How is it possible for armed men in new uniforms, so called demobilized soldiers, be running all over Haiti occupying strategic places in this country while we just watch as if there is no imminent security threat?

Poze Pitit!

These men claim to be demobilized soldiers. President Martelly and his government are yet to act, but before he does one or several Haitians could die in cold blood from the shots of firearm.

Shall we wait until that happens?

I ask myself what a lot of questions.

How is it possible for these men, demobilized soldiers, Remobilized Military, etc., to act with such confidence and arrogance, yet Haiti is a country with a police force, a seating president and United Nations forces in the form of MINUSTAH? Should we say that these organs have proved incapable of handling security issues in Haiti for a group of men who now intervene with guns?

Or should we say that these organs have failed the Haitian people by allowing these men to get to the streets without intervening?

It appalls me to see the laxity with which the matter is being handled. It makes me imagine that this could also be a ploy by some imps to take us back to the days of the Duvaliers.

If anyone cares to remember those days, sorrow should make them sleepless. Does anyone recall the dictatorship that was once upon the people of Haiti, with no room to air our views independently and no human rights at all? Anyone who opposed the government was met with uncalled for brutality. After all, these men who claim to be demobilized soldiers served in regimes whose hallmark was dictatorship.

Is that where they want to take us?

We are left in the dark, for it is not known who is the force or the face behind these men. Yet they have food, new boots, new uniforms and most dangerously, guns. Who is coordinating these men? Who is providing them with all these essential supplies?

I am also shocked by the contentment being displayed by Haitians. Don't we see the bigger picture? Why aren't we doing something about it, yet the threat is directly upon us? Shall we also wait till someone perishes for us to express our discontentment? Or are we incapacitated? Are we unable to act?

I would want to believe that the international community is watching as the situation unfolds, but am also not sure of this. The matter has been treated discretely, just like a secret of the state. The international media has hardly reported it. Whether it has been deliberately kept off the press is subject for another day, but it would only be prudent for the issue to be highlighted in the international media. Does the international community feel that it is something it can effectively handle should they continue?

I wonder.

Haitiens, soyons serieux.
