Launching of work of the new legislative building

Parliament is the heart and bloodline of the Haitian government. The country's current legislature was formed in the early 2000s and is composed of two houses: the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Meetings via a National Assembly or a joint session are highly essential for both houses to deliberate on different important matters of the State, which is why a proper venue for such meetings is highly essential.

The Palais Législatif, or the current legislative building which caters to the whole parliament, was severely damaged by the 2010 earthquake, forcing members of the parliament to temporarily hold their meetings in a classroom. The legislature has since had to keep up with an old, damaged building to house itself.

On the 28th of December of last year, the laying of the foundation stone marked the start of the new legislative building's construction that will become the new home of the Haitian Parliament. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, Senate President Simon Dieuseul Desras, Lower House President Levaillant Louis-Jeune,and other government officials and representative of the international community.

Aside from the new legislative building's obvious functional use, it will also hopefully be able to complement the Haitian Prime Minister's vision of providing Haiti with new, modern public buildings and infrastructures, strengthen the foundation of the different public institutions, and most importantly to give the State and the government a new, more credible public image. The total budget for the construction is around 33 million U.S. dollars and will take about two years to finish.
