Parliament Preparing for Possible Impeachment Proceedings against Michel Martelly

President Martelly is on the verge of being impeached. He has delayed national and local elections for almost two years now, citing problems with seating permanent members of the Electoral Council (EC). Both the international community and members of his own government have been calling for elections to be held by the end of 2013. The U.S. is standing by, ready to provide funding, but Martelly keeps using the EC as a scapegoat for not holding elections.

On September 16th, the Patriotic Movement of the Democratic Opposition is planning to assemble a coalition of 11 political parties to move against the Martelly government. They are encouraging Parliament to vote on a proposal presented by 13 Deputies.

In an unexpected maneuver, Martelly recently dropped in on two opposition leaders, Serge Gilles, of Platform Fusion, and Evans Paul of Inite Demokratik. Both politicians would not say much to the media about the specifics of their discussions with him, just that the meetings were not productive.

Martelly is desperate to hold his government together. The pressures of ruling are wearing him down, because he is inexperienced and not possessed of political talent. To add to his troubles, his wife, First Lady Sophia, and son, Oliver, have been accused of embezzling government funds. Formal charges have not been filed against the pair, but an investigation has been on-going.

In the meantime, a country-wide protest for September 30th is being organized to demand the removal of Martelly from office.
