Inmates and Prison condition in Haiti

1000 hygiene kits, which include detergent, toilet paper, soap, deodorant and toothpaste, were delivered along with an equal amount of bowls, spoons and cups. Also given to the 810 prisoners (26 women and 784 men) held in Cap-Haitien's prison were the gifts of jerseys, sandals and shorts. The presentation took place with Zéphirin Ardouin, Departmental Delegate, the prison director, Divisional Inspector Romage Marlon and Government Commissioner Lesly Jules as witness.
Inmates of the prisons of Gonaives, ST. Marc, the National Penitentiary, Fort Liberté, Grande Rivière du Nord, and Petionville have also been given aid to alleviate the standard of life within their walls and fulfill the basic needs and human rights of the inmates. The amount given varied by prison and the recorded number of inmates; those held at the National Penitentiary received 3,000 mattresses and sheet sets, 3,750 hygiene kits, plates, spoons and cups, and 500 jerseys, shorts and sandals (given to the most desperate), through the collaborative work of Auguste and prison officials.
The distribution plans would not have been possible, stated Auguste, without the plan originally laid out by President Martelly and Prime Minister Lamothe. Still, the donations are largely cosmetic, and wider plans for workshops on writing, painting and theater, as well as plans to modernize and standardize the judicial and prison systems are also being considered.
