Ministry of Tourism Budgets for Tourist Police in Haiti
Villedrouin wants the Tourist Police to keep panhandlers at bay, when tourists are visiting any tourist spot. Why she asks, should tourists be asked to subsidize our homeless on Haiti's streets? The begging for money has got to stop, she insists.
You can't have a half dozen or so children asking for money, after tourists have just spent their dollars at one of our restaurants. Not only does Minister Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin wants the Tourist Police to deter panhandlers from bothering tourists, she also wants the Tourist Police to offer assurance to tourists they are safe and will not be disturbed by vagrants on the streets, in restaurants, hotels, or any other tourist spots.
The Minister states her office is working on an initiative for a Tourist Police program and ". . . and it will be in my budget for next fiscal year . . ." As part of her argument for implementation of a Tourist Police, Minister Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin claims, "There are Tourist Police in all tourist destinations, this is not something we invented . . ."
