MINUSTAH & PNH Provide Protection to Dominican Trucks

As per the news report, on March 5th, Blas Peralta, the President of the National Federation of Dominican Transportation (Fenatrado), confirmed that a total of 27 trucks loaded with cement, rebars and food, were seized at the border after registering with the Haitian customs authority. Out of these, 24 trucks were blocked in the customs area of Ouanaminthe and 3, at the exit of Cap-Haitien because of planned protests and threats of retaliation against Dominicans drivers. The Haitian authority, fearing the security of the Dominican drivers due to the reason of aggravating tensed situation between the two countries, asked them to return to their country, but, however, refused to return their merchandise as those had already been registered with their customs department.

To ensure safe passages to the Dominican drivers, UN peacekeepers (MINUSTAH) and the National Police of Haiti (PNH) have established a safe corridor for trucks that would be used to bring merchandise from the Dominican Republic. The security corridor for trucks spans from Jimaní to the Haitian town of Kwadèbouke (Croix-des-Bouquets), and from there to the area near the international airport in Port-au-Prince. Blas Peralta has confirmed that the truck traffic through the border crossings at Jimaní and Dajabon has already been restored with the new protective covers implemented for Dominican drivers and trucks in Haiti. However, insufficient number of MINUSTAH members failed assure safe passage beyond this route. If any truck driver deviates this route, it would run on own risk, risking their lives and the theft of goods. However, he has maintained that the Haitian authority must give full protection cover for the Dominican trucks till their destination. Otherwise, Dominican trucks will not enter Haiti.
