Agreement On Free Trade

On taking office on August 16, 2012, Danilo Medina stated that efforts would be made towards an agreement in free trade with neighbors of the Dominican Republic in Hispaniola. Such an agreement would help producers at the domestic level to take advantage of services and goods available in Haiti.

He made this announcement after a courtesy call with Albert Ramdin, the Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States. The meeting was attended by Michelle Cohen, Ambassador and Shelly Dass-Clark, the policy advisor of Ramdin. Ramdin also happens to be the Chairman of Group of Friends, in Haiti.

Common Agenda For Regional Development

Danilo Medina stated that a common agenda would be developed and a commitment would be made by members of CARICOM for promoting development within the region. An anchor would be required to ensure success of the government, which would lead the dialogues between the rest of CARICOM and Haiti.

He further hoped that both the Dominican Republic and Haiti would pursue new ventures with CARICOM. In the present times, the Dominican Republic is the Observer to the Community in the Caribbean.

Trading Across The Borders

There has been a lot of tension historically between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. However, grudges at national level get trumped by the economic interest where trade is exchanged in millions, every week, across the borders. The borders between Haiti and Dominican Republic are opened on Friday and Monday. A narrow bridge links the two nations and metal gates are unlocked by guards at 8 am on the market days.

People of Haiti sell salami, carrots, eggs, squash, peppers, eggplant, peppers and many other vegetables and other products! Besides this trading sugar and the tourism industry are the prominent generators of revenue in the Dajabon market.
