Haiti Renames Cap-Haitien Airport to Hugo Chavez International Airport

The international airport second largest city in Haiti, Cap-Haïtien will be named after former Venezuela's President, late Hugo Chavez. The announcement was made by Laurent Lamothe, Prime Minister of Haiti using micro-blogging website called Twitter. Lamothe sent out the tweet on Thursday afternoon (18th April) when he was on a 6-day tour to USA to boast about the achievement of the Martelly-Lamothe administration.

Lamothe sent out his tweet in French one day after a confusion that spread across the social media platforms regarding homage to be paid to Chavez. Before the tweet was sent out, it was reported by some of the Haitian blogs that Toussaint L'Ouverture International Airport of Port-au-Prince will be named after late Hugo Chavez.

The 7,500-foot runway of the international airport in Cap-Haïtien was unveiled in October last year. This runway gave the regional airport a status of an international airport. The runway was asphalted using a Venezuelan Development Bank loan. Gary Bodeau, communication chief of Prime Minister Lamothe said that late President Hugo Chavez helped Haiti and her people a lot during the day of distress and misery through his $1 billion aid pledge. He continued saying that Haitian people and Haiti as whole is indebted to Chavez and as a tribute to this great man, the newly reformed airport in Cap-Haïtien will be named after him.

During the administration of Hugo Chavez, Haiti received enormous aids from Venezuela and the most important of all programs was the Petrocaribe oil program that helped Haitians to rebuild their nation after the devastating earthquake of 2010.
