An appellate court recently requested a more through investigation into the alleged violations be undertaken. It is a pivotal decision that sets the stage for state prosecutors to dig up more evidence, which could demand a trial be set to prosecute him.
Baby Doc's lead defense attorney, Reynold Georges, filed an appeal against the appellate court and voiced his concern that if the appellate, after examining fresh evidence, decides to rule against Baby Doc, it will start a civil war.
Georges, who appeared in Haiti's Supreme Court to ask the three appellate judges be dismissed from the case ". . . because they were untrustworthy", is fighting tooth and nail for his client, who has also been alleged to have embezzled funds from government coffers.
Baby Doc was known as a playboy and only a figurehead of the government of Haiti. It is said that his mother actually carried out the duties of the office of the presidency, while Baby Doc performed the ceremonial aspects of the office.
