Having given assistance to thousands of people since its inception with help from local businesses, fund and awareness raising efforts, the program has garnered the attention of the US State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) who work assiduously to keep the rise of irregular migration into US shores under control. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has thus received a donation of $100,000 to be used to improve the program and give 300 assistance packages to detained migrants.
Having labeled the irregular migration as 'dangerous' when referring to the hundreds of deaths which occur because of the practice yearly, the United Nations plans for the funds to deal more specifically with registration, assistance upon reception, medical assistance, transportation and temporary accommodation. Their IOM office will work in tandem with the government arm responsible for Haitians facing repatriation, the National Office for Migration (ONM).
Cited as one of the poorest regions of the country, the northwest's residents risk the uncertain and perilous journey because of a lack of opportunity within their communities and the country in general. A reported 93% has said that the creation of jobs and access to opportunities would dissuade them from making future attempts.
