OAS To Deploy Observation Mission For The Upcoming Haiti Election

On Monday, 23 March 2015, José Miguel Insulza, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), during his two days visit to Haiti, met the Haitian President and the Haitian Prime Minister to discuss the issues on the challenges faced by the Haitian government in creating favorable conditions to hold the overdue election as a mark to show its commitment to the social and economic development of the country. The Secretary General has admitted the fact that the situation is very complicated and posing extraordinary challenges for the Haitian government because of its difficult economic condition and fragile political environment. Nevertheless, these have created more importance to put the country on a sounder footing.

The Secretary general, during his short trip to Haiti, met with the leaders of political parties, a delegation of Senators and representatives of civil society, members of the international community resident in Haiti, including the ambassadors of OAS member states, the Core Group and Heads of the agencies of the Inter-American System. He has mentioned the plan of OAS to deploy an observation mission for the coming election. So far, OAS has deployed over 200 electoral missions historically, fifty percent of which had been deployed during this decade. The OAS leader has also mentioned that the professional attitude of these missions has maintained complete independence and they were never susceptible to any influence or pressure. He has appreciated the intention of the Government of Haiti to hold dialogue with Dominican Republic for resolving issues on bilateral differences. The OAS has been always committed to extend its support for the Haitians for moving forward toward sustained political stability and self-sufficiency.
