Morne L'Hôpital Reforestation Project Failing

The Martelly Administration began a rehabilitation project for the Morne hospital. They would provide many thousands of seedlings, build 48 toilets, erect half a dozen sediment retention ponds, and demarcate the reforestation of the hospital with stone bunds. Little has happened to achieve these goals.

President Jean-Martin of the Citizens Collective says seedlings were planted, but no one is monitoring them. Instead, residents are carrying off the stone bunds, leaving goats free to graze on seedlings struggling to become saplings. Appeals to the Petion-Ville mayor about the situation have gone unheeded.

Land disputes are another problem, with residents claiming property rights that interfere with the erection of the stone bunds in several spots.

No education of Ménard's residents as to why reforestation is important has happened. Without education and monitoring, Morne L'Hôpital project is stuck with no way to move forward. Ménard needs reforestation, but it also needs sanitation, drinking water, schools, and a cholera clinic to manage the re-emergence of the epidemic.
