Rand Paul joined team of eye surgeons on mission to Haiti

Rand Paul: Haitians Must Do for Themselves, not Accept More Foreign Aid.

Republican Senator Rand Paul, instead of stumping on the campaign trail for the U.S. presidency, is doing charitable work in Haiti. With funding from University of Utah Moran Eye Center he and a group of eye surgeons are in Haiti to perform free cataract surgeries.

Rand and company are operating to restore eyesight to 200 people. He says the need in Haiti for this surgery results from its close proximity to the equator, a sunnier climate, and more people walking around without sunglasses.

Rand has a dual purpose: one, to perform cataract surgery, and two, to provide training to Haitian eye surgeons. Rand's ". . . goal is not for Americans to keep coming down and doing it, but for Haitians to do more of it themselves." The city of Cap Haitien is where the surgeries are being carried out at Vision Plus Clinique.

Rand is phlegmatic about his standing in the field of GOP candidates even though his poll numbers are falling. He admits he's ". . . been under a dog pile for a couple of weeks." He needs major donors to contribute to a national network, a legacy of his father, ex-Representative Ron Paul.

Rand's views are extreme on foreign aid. He wants the U.S. to stop sending aid to countries, including Haiti. He says, "The U.S. has had a big role for many . . . years here (and) . . . it hasn't fixed things."
