New Law School at Aristide University in Haiti

UniFa officially opened its gates for academic study in 2001, but was closed after three years when Aristide was ousted from the presidency for a second time. In 2004, staff and faculty found themselves hiding or in exile, putting an abrupt end to the studies of enrolled medicals students and plans for a nursing school. Some of these students had to finish their education in nearby Cuba. The school was subsequently turned into a military barracks by United Nations and US military forces. It would remain under their control until 2007.

In keeping with its tradition for medical studies, the school also opened a social medicine training seminar, attended by some 20 students, half local and half international. The focus on the new law program, however, took the forefront. Professor Phillips stated that the hope is to train local lawyers to the highest standard possible through the partnerships, creating an advanced legal and political sciences faculty for the university.
