Haitian American Mayor of Spring Valley, Noramie Jasmin, arrested on Corruption

This came as a shock and a surprise to the Haitian community in Spring Valley. In April 2013, Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Deputy Mayor Joseph A. Desmaret were arrested Tuesday April 4, 2013 by FBI agents for their alleged involvement in the sale of a land that was supposed to be used for a community center.

This was staged by FBI agents. According to the assistant director of the FBI, George Venizelos, Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Deputy Mayor Joseph A. Desmaret were involved in conning some members of the village's board of trustees to vote for a developer, that Jasmin had a financial stake in the sale.

Two Haitian-Canadian Mayors Life-Long Friends - Michel Adrien and Ulrick Cherubin

In synchronization, two Haitian college friends lives' have run on parallel tracks. Michel Adrien and Ulrick Cherubin are both mayors of their adopted towns in Quebec, Canada. Adrien runs the town of Mont-Laurier and Cherubin, Amos. Each has experienced popularity with their constituents, with multiple terms of office.

Cherubin, almost 70, and Adrien, in his mid-60s, first got acquainted at Port-au-Prince University during the 1960s. They had each decided on a teaching career, and it was Adrien, with better math skills, who helped Cherubin meet his general education requirements.

During Cherubin and Adrien's early life, Haiti suffered under the tyrannous reigns of François Duvalier and son, Jean-Claude. Adrien left Haiti after graduation, immigrating to Montreal. Within a year, he found a teaching position in Mont-Laurier. Although a town with little racial diversity, he felt accepted at once. Cherubin, who left Haiti in 1971, also found acceptance in Amos. He arrived there on the offer of a teaching position in 1973.

Anna Pierre, candidate for mayor of North Miami, threatened with Voodoo dolls

Mayoral candidate from North Miami, Anna Pierre, is one among eight people fighting for the post. Anna Pierre is a popular figure. She is a well-known nurse and a singer. Mete Suk Sou Bonbon - her hit song of the 1990's scaled up her popularity. She asked people from 3 countries to pray for her because there is someone who is using anonymous calls from blocked numbers along with sinister sorcery to prevent her from becoming mayor. Anna Pierre said that she found needle poked small dolls and ample amount of pennies in front of her office and being a person from Haiti, she knows the meaning of those things. She indicated towards voodoo practices being used by someone to throw her out of the race. Anna said that people from U.S., Canada and Haiti are praying for her and that she is not afraid because Jesus is with her.

North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre Involved in Developer Scandal

North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre is being criticized for keeping undercover his role as advisor to Cayemite Enterprises (CE), who plans to build a luxury resort on Petite Cayemite Island near the coast of Haiti. Developer Michael Swerdlow of Oleta Partners (OP) is also an advisor to CE as well as an investor. Both he and Pierre have connections to Biscayne Landing (BL) project, a property of North Miami. CE stakeholders are also executives at Swerdlow's OP, and have connections to the BL project.

Mayor Andre Pierre wants to invest in CE. But the city charter bans officials from conducting business with city vendors like CE. Because Pierre is not known to make money in any capacity he has with CE, it's not certain if his investing in CE would be a violation of the charter terms.

The Mayor of Petion-Ville, Claire Lydie Parent, revoked

Haiti's Petion-Ville now has a new mayor. Reports said that the government revoked former Mayor Claire Lydie Parent's mandate. According to Minister of the Interior and Local Authorities Ronsard St. Cyr, the revocation will take effect for over a year. Yvanca Jolicoeur Brutus is now Petion-Ville's new mayor. She was installed recently and is expected to receive assistance from officials Kerna Duval and Dominique Saint-Roc.

Claire Lydie Parent confirmed the revocation but she said that she was not aware that the government was making such a decision. The incident came after Parent issued a statement wherein she blamed government supporters for bringing trouble to the city. In her statement, Parent said that people in Petion-Ville are now suffering because the municipal government's function has been limited. She claimed that government supporters are creating trouble in the city in order to prevent the municipal government from doing its job to the fullest.

Court Summons Former Mayor Muscadin Jean Yves Jason Over Market Fire

Muscadin Jean Yves Jason, former mayor of Haiti capital of Port-au-Prince, fell in hot water as the authorities investigate the recent devastating fire in the public market. Jason received a subpoena to appear in court amid the investigation. His lawyer, Andre Michel, confirmed the reports but said that the former mayor would not heed the summons due to several confusions in the subpoena. Michel expressed ire over the court invitation, saying that it was a form of "political persecution" orchestrated by the authorities who want his client to be the suspect in the fire. He laid down the reasons why he did not advise his client to appear in court despite the subpoena.

She was just spectacular at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, this week. Ludmya "Mia" Bourdeau Love drew rousing cheers during her speech at the Republican National Convention.

Not only that, Mia Love delivered quite some heavy blows to President Obama. Mr. President, said to Love, "I'm here to tell you the American people are awake and we're not buying what you're selling in 2012" . "Mr. President, I'm here to tell you the American people are awake and we're not buying what you're selling in 2012," . Love further said: "Let me tell you about the America I know. My parents immigrated to this country with $10 in their pockets and the hope the America they heard about really did exist. When tough times came, they did not look to Washington, they looked within. So, the America I grew up knowing was centered in self-reliance and filled with the possibility of living the American dream."

Mudslides and rainstorms killed 13 in Haiti and threaten even more

For the past seven days, Haiti has been getting more than its fair share with heavy rain in the Port-au-Prince region. According to Haiti's Civil Protection Department, so far a total of 13 people has been reported dead. However, according to officials, this number is likely to rise as the Haitian authority are assessing the damage caused by the recent rain and flood.

On Monday night, the southern region of Haiti received between four and six inches of rain within a six hour period. The rain has caused floods and mudslides. The situation got so bad that some people to find refuge on their rooftops.

Haitian-American Noramie Festa Jasmin made History as Mayor of Spring Valley

This is a sign that the Haitian community is moving and if I may say "Up" in the US. The latest is having one of our own elected as mayor in a major town. On behalf of the Haitian diaspora in the United States and all over the world, I would like to congratulate Noramie Festa Jasmin as the new Mayor of Spring Valley.

She has become the first Haitian American and the first woman to be elected as Mayor of Spring valley in 2009.

Before becoming Mayor of Spring Valley in New York, Noramie Jasmin occupied the position of trustee as well as deputy Mayor.
