Phoenix Soccer Stadium, Haiti's First

Private investor Morad Fareed, once a player for the Palestinian soccer team and a New York property developer, has partnered with Boby Duval, also an ex-soccer player in Haiti. Duval established and runs L'Athlétique d'Haiti, a Cité Soleil not-for-profit organization. The partners have hired architect Carlos Zapata to design and build the 12,000-seat Phoenix Stadium. The stadium site will also house a private academy and public garden.

Zapata, an Ecuadorian, has impressive credentials. He oversaw the renovation of Chicago's Solider Field, lauded as both practical and appealing. He is currently involved in the design and building of a modern metropolitan area located in the equatorial zone.

Not long ago, Zapata's associates revealed the Phoenix Stadium design to the business community in Haiti. The construction of the stadium will happen in several stages. The first ground-breaking stage will start in fall of 2013. Estimates for the first phase range from $2.5 million to $5 million, with a five-month completion date.

Zapata explains he is aiming for a first-rate stadium, a place of stylized beauty, with open and natural surroundings. He is excited that there will be a private school for Haitian youth to attend. And he adds, ". . . hopefully one day we will be able to launch a league."
