National Platform of Loyal Transport Unions (PNSTF) on Strike

The National Platform of Loyal Transport Unions (PNSTF) is not happy with the de facto Evans Paul's government decision to raise taxes by presidential order dated September 23, 2015. The order issued without the statutory approval of an acting parliament was published in the official newspaper "Le Moniteur" on October 8, 2015. As per the published order, it states that for the fiscal year 2015-16, the following increased rates will be applicable on the renewal of driving license and registration: Type A driving license from 1000.00 to 3000.00 gourdes; Type B, 1,000.00 to 4,500.00 gourds; driving license for motorcycle 500.00 to 1,000.00 gourds. Passport stamp duties will go up to 3000 gourds from present 1600 gourds, licensing fees will cost more.

The unionists of PNSTF believe that unless the decision is rolled back, such tax increases would further worsen the condition of the present precarious economy. It would benefit no one other than few civil servants who are living lavishly on the meager and weak financial resources of the country. If the de facto administration does not reverse its decision by Wednesday, November 4, the union will launch a general strike of public transport across the national territory for two days on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November and they are ready to take their demonstrations to civil disobedience.

The National Platform of Unions of Transport Faithful (PNSTF) is an association which includes twenty union organizations like the Union of Public Drivers from West department (SCPDO), the National Association of Drivers (ANC) and the Union of drivers of Petit-Goâve, Carrefour, Jacmel, Miragoâne Mirebalais and St. Marc.
