6th Summit of Heads of State of Association of Caribbean States (AEC)

On April 30, 2014, Haitian President Michel Martelly had participated in the 6th Summit of the Heads of the State and Government of the Association of Caribbean States (AEC) in Merida, Mexico. The President was accompanied by Duly Brutus the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other important officials from his ministries. On this occasion on Wednesday, the Haitian President had put forward three proposals--(a) Creation of Troika Mechanism within the organization to deal with the relevant issues in the world, (b) Empowerment of synergies through regional integration; & (c) Enhancement of the budget for the Organization.

Alfonso Munera, the Secretary General of the ACS who was present in the occasion, appreciated President Martelly's brief speech in which he has clearly described every important achievement of his administration.

Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto, the President of Mexico who has plans to visit Haiti in the coming September, highly praised the efforts of the Haitian President and renewed his support on several areas of developments like tourism, geospatial initiatives against the risk of major natural calamities and modernization of Port international de Port-au-Prince. He also offered to sell Mexican petroleum products at privileged prices to Haiti. Outside the gambit of the summit, President Martelly met José Miguel Insulza, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) who reiterated the support of OAS for the upcoming Haitian election. Michel Martelly further met Mrs. George Pau-Langevin, the Minister of Overseas France, to discuss some critical issues like law and education in Haiti with special emphasis on the formation of the "Maitres". The French Minister Mrs. George Pau-Langevin expressed France's confidence and eagerness to provide assistance to the University of Limonade and Lycée des Coteaux in Haiti.

The Haitian delegation also held discussions with several personalities from other countries like Panama, Guyana, and Jamaica.
