The agreement is expected to help both Haiti and Dominican Republic to ensure energy security and deal with problems that may arise. If one faces a challenge in its energy security, the other would be there to help out. However, there are no specific details yet. Jumeau said an actual agreement will be made based on the countries' technical capabilities, access to funds and their social and commercial relations. The current agreement only touches on bilateral projects and relations with international organizations.
Both Jumeau and Ramirez agreed that power interconnection between Haiti and Dominican Republic is important as it can shape Hispaniola's future in energy. Currently, Haiti produces about 400 megawatts of electricity, while Dominican Republic makes 3,000 megawatts. It is also known that Electricity of Haiti has been having problems with the expensive purchase of electricity from three private providers. Given this, the agreement might give a relief to Haiti's energy sector, while further improving that of the Dominican Republic. Officials are set to discuss a definite plan on how to go about the interconnection agreement, which is seen to expand the market to 20 million people.
