In an open declaration, the Martelly-Lamothe government said that a minority group of corrupted people are forcing the majority of the Haitian population to suffer. This will not be tolerated and that the government will do everything to get back the stolen money and use it for the purposes that it was intended for and this includes infrastructure development, development and improvement of health-care facilities, compulsory universal education and other social-benefit programs.
The declaration by the Martelly-Lamothe government revealed that 60 fraudsters were so far charged for the embezzlement 10 million gourdes that were intended for compulsory education and Pétion-Ville (former mayor) will also be prosecuted for the embezzlement of 3 million gourdes that was intended for municipality expenses. It was also announced that two more units of ULCC will be opened in Northeast and Northwest for this war against corruption and that currently 150 cases of financial fraud and corruption are being handled by ULCC's Director General, Antoine Atouriste. It was also announced that Haiti moved up to the rank of 165 from 175 in Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International. The government however mentioned that though this was an improvement, the government wants to see Haiti moving up to the list of top 100 during the next year.
The government went on saying that the ramifications of corruption are complex and vast and is not only eating up the country at its heart but is also destroying the image of Haiti in international community. The Martelly-Lamothe government gave an open call to the citizens of Haiti to rise and help against corruption through active reporting as a civic gesture for the nation and the future of their children.
