New Premises for the EU delegation in Haiti

Haitian President, Michel Martelly, in the company of the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, representatives of Haitian institutions, and other officials, took part in the grand opening of the new premises of the EU delegation in Haiti. These premises suffered heavy damage in the earthquake of January 2010.

The Head of State lauded this initiative and said that it held great promise for the future. He also said this gesture should encourage the European Union to establish a stronger partnership with Haiti and support its reconstruction and development plans.

President Martelly acknowledged the areas that the European Union in Haiti gave priority, such as food and education, as being very important for the nation's development.
Points raised by the President of the European Council

• He and President Martelly examined the different components of their bilateral relationship and discussed political and economic reforms. The President of the EU pledged to visit several development projects to give him a better picture of the progress made and challenges faced.

• He also discussed with the President the rule of law in Haiti and progress in democracy. He encouraged the holding of elections before the end of the year, to facilitate stability and proper running of political institutions. He also pledged the support of the European Union in preparing for elections.

The president of the EU thanked the President for his hospitality and pledged support in ensuring a better future for the Haiti people.
