Barack Obama to honor Doctor Jerry Lowney for work in Haiti

When he built the first HHF building with his own resources in the early '80's, Lowney was able to give immediate help to the poor and desperate through the clinic and other facilities housing X-ray equipment and a full laboratory. His initial effort grew to where HHF aid is offered in 104 rural communities, a representation of a quarter million of the poorest in the hemisphere.
They've developed an ambulance service that traverses far-reaching, under-developed areas to get to the sick and built give food production plants where food, high in protein, is made using local fare. The foundation has also opened 5 hub clinics, built a school, supports a soccer program for girls and builds houses for the disabled.
With these incredible contributions Lowney had surely nominated himself among President Obama's picks. He acknowledges the award as a way to shine a light on the work of the HHF, but even this bit of modesty does not negate the importance of the Rotary Club Award. Picks must be nominated by their governors, and the ceremony, plus the White House seal of approval, gives massive credibility to the little foundation that could.
