Impact of Second-hand clothing market On Haiti

Haiti is becoming a trash can as clothes that the Americans no longer need are being thrown into it. Critics said that because people prefer to buy new Second-hand clothing than to re-wash their old clothes, the environment is being degraded. The habit of throwing away dirty clothes than washing them adds to the country's environmental problems as old clothes end up in sewers, garbage dumps and streets.

Another problem that critics said is caused by the Second-hand clothing market is that it cuts down other businesses. Local shoemakers and clothing businesses are losing customers as most people go to sellers of Second-hand products. This then leads to the shutdown of local businesses, as well as job losses.

On the other hand, sellers of Used products said that the business is more than importing second-hand and cheap clothes from the United States. They believe that the business provides Haitians access to such products and brands like Polo, Converse and Lacoste. Without the pepe market, Haitians, who love American fashion and brands, will never be able to own such products.
