Consequences That Deadbeat Parents Face
Deadbeat parents pertain to a non-custodial mother or father who continuously fails to pay for child support. Many parents who have been ordered by a court to provide a certain amount of financial support to their kids have child support debt. This is because of various reasons such as financial incapability, loss of job, and other emergencies that affected the parent's ability to cover the child support. However, according to a study, there are also non-custodial parents who intentionally refuse to pay as a form of strike against their lack of visitation rights.
Child Support Calculation: Things You Should Know
Children are the most vulnerable people affected in a divorce proceeding. Their interests should be protected at all costs. They shouldn't feel neglected the moment their parents decided to go on separate ways. And this is why you have to understand the importance of child support and how to go about it.
Whether you will be the custodial or non-custodial parent, you need to know how to calculate child support for your kid. To know more about it, here are some pieces of information that can help you out.
Child support policies may differ depending on the state you and your family are living in. However, the common factors involved in child support calculation include the parents' monthly income, the child's needs, and the parents' financial condition. Your child's standard of living should you and your partner remained married is also a factor to take into account because the kid should not get less than he/she deserves.
Collecting Child Support From Abusive Parent While Ensuring Safety
Getting child support from your abusive spouse after breaking up with him might be difficult. Not only you can be threatened or hurt physically, mentally, and emotionally, your child can also be put in danger. When you have an abusive partner, it is best to stay away from that person as much as possible.
However, this doesn't mean that the abusive parent can get away from the responsibility of providing child support. Here are some ways to collect child support from an abusive parent without fear for your and your children's safety.
Passport Denial Program Against Deadbeat Parents
Failing to pay for child support has repercussions, one of which is the denial of passport. Deadbeat parents, or those who have been unable to meet their child support obligation, can have their passports revoked under the law. With the Passport Denial Program, parents who have arrearages over $2,500 will not be able to apply for a new passport or use any passport services until they settle their debt.
Under the program, the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement can file a report to the Department of State, which has the power to deny passport services to a non-custodial parent failing to pay for child support. The parents' inclusion in the Passport Denial Program will only be removed after a certain period of time upon payment of their debt.
Child Support During Unemployment
When you lose your job and you have child support to pay, it doesn't free you from your financial obligation to your child. You will still have to make child support payments even if you no longer have a source of income. This can be a huge problem to you because failure to pay for child support can lead to many problems.
The state can revoke or deny you a passport, as well as suspend your driver's and recreational licenses. Your car can be seized, while you can be found in contempt of court should you try to hide from your former spouse and child. Worse, you can be put behind bars in some states that impose prison time for those failing to meet their child support obligations.
