Haiti removed from imminent danger area List

Did you know that Haiti was one of the countries in the world designated by United States Department of Defense (DOD) as "imminent danger areas". So what is it exactly? Is this good or bad? How did Haiti manage to get in that list?

The combatant commands conducted in-depth threat assessments on a regular basis to determine the level of imminent threat to US military personnel due to civil insurrection, civil war or act of terrorism. Based on their evaluation, Haiti was one of the many countries determined to be in the list.

Haiti Road Condition, an Accident Waiting to Happen

Travel by auto on Haiti's roads risks serious injury or death. All National, Department, or County roads are in disrepair from lack of maintenance. Dangerous road conditions and lack of traffic signals and driving principles encourage bad driving habits.

All throughout Haiti, County roads are largely unpaved and littered with potholes. Mountainous roads are particularly perilous, with hairpin turns and an absence of guardrails. Often made of gravel, they can cause a vehicle to slide off the shoulder to death 1,000 feet below.

The government of Haiti (GOH) insists it has no money in its budget to rescue drivers in perilous situations, do clean-up after accidents, or remove stalled autos obstructing traffic. But the GOH's claims are questionable.

Poverty And Crime In Cite Soleil

Comfortable living space, safety, security and luxury are some of the things that are uncommon among people living in Cite Soleil, an extremely poor town in the Arrondissement of Port-au-Prince in Ouest Department. As a matter of fact, it is considered one of the poorest and most dangerous towns in Haiti.

Around 400,000 residents live in Cite Soleil without a decent access to electricity. The sewerage and canal systems in the town are in poor condition, while only a few businesses are open to serve the residents. There are some hospitals and only one school. While half of the houses in Cite Soleil were made of cement and metal roof, the other 50% were makeshift shelters built in materials that residents have scavenged.

What is Fear and what are the common Fears

Fear is one of the most common and most powerful kinds of emotion that every human being experiences at some point.
Fear is a mechanism or a response to a certain stimulus that could be associated to danger, horror, or pain.

The universal emotion of fear has two stages, first is a biochemical reaction and the second is an emotional reaction. A biochemical reaction usually involves several physical traits such as sweating, increased heartbeat, and adrenaline rush. During this stage, an individual undergoes a mental process of "fight or flight" where he or she prepares the body to react either by facing the situation like going in battle or to run away. An emotional reaction then happens, which is fear. This stage could determine the experience of fear as positive or negative. Extreme sports and horror films usually have a positive bearing to fear, but most fearful experiences are often dealt with and perceived negatively such as accidents.

Tips to Protect Your Children from Harm

Children are vulnerable in situations in which they feel uncomfortable, insecure, or frightened. Taught to obey adult authority without question, they are unable to act on their instincts when confronted with strangers who intend them harm. Here are some guidelines to keep your children safe.

• Sit down with your children and talk to them. Tell them if any stranger gets too close for comfort to run away as quickly as possible. Instruct them to yell as loud as possible as they run to safety.

• Don't allow your children to go anywhere by themselves. If they are young, have someone you know well accompany them. If your children are older, ensure they always travel with a friend. Keep tabs on your children.
