Casa de la Cultura's specialist Mayelín Batista mentioned to Prensa Latina in a report that the National Afro-Caribbean Festival in Eva Gasper's Memory consisted of dance performances, religious rituals' demonstration, song competitions, handicrafts exhibition, traditional food samples display and a parade. Mayelín also reported that during this 14th Annual Festival a conference was held on influence of Afro-Caribbean culture on Cuba as well as popular traditional culture.
'My Roots' was a space present in the festival where research papers on rescuing Haitian tradition on the Cuban island were presented. Mayelín went on to explain that the Festival was more of cultural than being religious. As mentioned before, this festival is celebrated to honor Eva Gasper who moved to Cuba and promoted the Haitian roots in Primero de Enero. Eva also founded Nago, a dance group. The Afro-Caribbean Festival reflects the life and vibrancy of the Haitian traditions.
