Two-time rape victim fights for justice - Malya Villard-Appolon CNN Heroe

Malya Villard-Appolon, the leader of KOFAVIV (Commission of Women Victims for Victims), has been included in one of the top ten heroes of CNN. Her inclusion was attributed to her efforts and campaigns to protect rape victims and to stop such a crime in Haiti. Malya Villard-Appolon was a two-time victim of rape herself. She was raped in 1992 and in 2003, while her daughter suffered the same fate. Despite this, however, Appolon did not give up. Instead, she established KOFAVIV and vowed to seek justice not just for herself and for her daughter but for all the women in Haiti, where the incidences of rape have been increasing.

Malya Villard-Appolon said that a high number of women, including young girls, mothers and even babies, are getting victimized. She added that the situation got even worse after the 2010 earthquake as a lot of people lost their homes and had nowhere to live. The security after the calamity was so poor that more women were being raped. Some of the rape victims got pregnant. What makes it more disheartening is that since the increase of rape cases after the quake, no one has ever been convicted of the crime. This prevented the victims from getting the justice that they deserve.

KOFAVIV has already aided over 1,400 women by giving them shelter and helping them deal with the trauma that the crime has done to them. Appolon said that the $50,000 grant from CNN will be used to send children to school, as well as hire more security guards to help protect women from rapists.
