Bas Limbe, Second Most Important Town In Nord Department

Bas-Limbe is located in Haiti's Nord Department. After Cap Haitien it is the second most important one in the Nord Department. In the Arrondissement of Limbe, it is a municipality. From Bas-Limbe and Limbe, Cap Haitien is located at a 26 km distance. Port Margot is at 8 km and Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti is at 150 km distance. French colonialists and Haitian slave battled fiercely in Limbe town.

Main Occupation

Main occupation of this town is agriculture with the winding River Limbe passing through Bas-Limbe into the sea. Coffee, bananas, mangoes and other fruits are grown here with constant water supply from the river. Vast rice pads are grown close to the sea.

Limonade, A Remote Location In Haiti

Limonade is located in Haiti's Nord Department. In the Cap-Haitien Arrondissment, it is a municipality. Around 69,256 people inhabit the place. Limonade is remotely placed on Haiti's northern coast. Roucou, Basse Plaine and Bois de Lance are the three districts and settlements in the neighboring areas of Limonade.

Why Limonade Is In The News

It was in Limonade that the first Christmas was celebrated in 1492 by Christopher Columbus and his crew. At Bord de Mer the great explorer he had docked his ship in the land he conquered near Limonade. In 1714, Charles Fournier de la Chapelle a well known French judge was born in Limonade.

Cap-Haitian, A Fine Vacation Destination In Haiti

Cap-Haitian also known formerly as le Cap, Cap-Henri and Cap-Francais is located on Haiti's northern coast. It is the capital of the Department of Nord and is located near Milot, a historic town. It has around 190,000 inhabitants with indigenous migrants from South and Central America. During the colonial rule it was an important city where it served as the capital of the French Colony of Saint Dominigue from 1711 to 1770.

Anti Government And Revolutionary Movements

The capital was moved to Port-au-Prince. Initially, under the rule of King Henri Christophe, it was Kingdom of Northern Haiti's first capital. Infrastructure for transportation was not very good during that time. The city was destroyed by the 7th May 1842 earthquake.

Grande-Riviere-Du-Nord, A Location In Haiti

Grande-Rivière-du-Nord is located in Haiti's Nord Department. In the Grande-Rivière-du-Nord Arrondissement it is a municipality. It is located to the north of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti at a distance of 120 kilometers. It is situated at an elevation of 92 meters above the level of the sea.

The Fast Flowing La Grande Riviere Du Nord River

On the Cormiers plantation in 1758, Jean-Jackques Dessalines was born here. In the geographical coordinates, latitude 72° 11' 0" West of the Greenwich meridian and latitude 19° 35' 0" North of the equator, is located La Grande Riviere du Nord a river in Haiti. It flows relatively fast.

Plaisance, A Favorite Sightsseing Destination In Haiti

Plaisance is located in Haiti's Nord Department. In the Plaisance Arrondissement, it is a municipality. Around 63,278 people inhabit the place as indicated by the 2009 estimates. During the colonial times, the French considered Plaisance a favorite destination for relaxation and rest.

Located nearby, is a peak called Morne Bedoret at a height of 543 meters. The Fort Bedourete is located here. There are a large number of sites and monuments to see in Plaisance. They include Miracles Virgin Gobert's former chapel where in 1803, Alexandre Petion and Jean-Jacques Dessalines met before the launch of the final assault against Cape Francais.

Quartier-Morin, A Small Town In Haiti

Quartier-Morin is located in Haiti's Nord Department. In Haiti's northern peninsula, it is a small town. In the Cap-Haitien Arrondissement, it is a municipality having around 24,000 inhabitants. De Quartier Morin and Quartier Morin Ville are the other names used for Quartier-Morin.

The 2010 Disputed Elections

There was a violent protest during the disputed elections that took place in the year 2010. Quartier-Morin hit the news when United Nation peacekeepers shot down one of the demonstrators.

From Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti one has to travel eighty miles to get to Quartier-Morin. It is located at 19.687655 latitude and -72.162345 longitude. Morne-Pele and Basse Plaine are the two sections into which the municipality is divided.

Bahon, A Fine Destination In Haiti

Bahon is a town located in the Nord Department of Haiti in the Grande-Rivière-du-Nord Arrondissement and on the popular river named Grand Rivière du Nord. It was located formerly on the rail road towards the south of Cap Haitien in the year 1915.

Around 17,000 people inhabit this place as per estimates. It is located at an elevation of 171 meters above the level of the sea. To the northwest of Bahon is located, Cap Haitien at a distance of 21 miles. Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti is located at 66 miles away to the south of Bahon.

Nestle Grants $3.5 Million to rescue Dying Coffee Industry

Nestlé is spear-heading a program that will target Haitian coffee farmers, who have the natural resources to produce specialty coffees. The corporation is collaborating with the Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN), a division of the Inter-American Development Bank, along with L'Agence Française de Développement. The agencies will hand out $3.5 million in grants to re-invigorate Haiti's sagging coffee industry. Statistics cite export coffee production plummeted from 191,000 bags in 1990 to 16,000 bags nearly two decades later.

The comprehensive program includes best practices for sustainability farming, coffee bean harvesting, sorting, manufacturing processes, quality assurance, fair trade certification, and marketing. The coffee collectives will also learn cost-effective techniques to lower production costs. The program will also assist coffee farmers learn new business skills, including collective procurement of agricultural tools, machinery, and methods of bean roasting.
