Fort-Liberté is located in Haiti's Nord-Est-Department. In Haiti, it is the oldest country and Haiti got its independence here on November 29,1803. The Dominican Republic is located close to its border. Around 11,465 people inhabit the place. The language spoken in the region is Creole. Hurricanes, storms and sunshine are all experienced bringing changes in temperature.

How It Got Its Name
Indians inhabited the region originally after which the Spanish colonists came. In 1578 they found the city of Bayaja and in 1605 abandoned it. In 1732 the French reoccupied it as Fort-Dauphin. In 1764, Spanish forces captured it and in 1801 shortly, after independence was declared in 1803, it was restored to the French.

In the Dominican Republic the communities inside the sugarcane plantations are called batey. Many Haitians and Dominicans who have migrated from Haiti, work in the sugarcane plantations. Many people from Haiti have been fleeing Haiti to work as seasonal laborers in the sugarcane industry in Dominican Republic.

Poor Working Conditions

Access to healthcare and working and living conditions in the Dominican Republic are very often poor. There is lack of electricity, sanitary facilities and running water. After Christopher Columbus's colonization, the sugarcane plant was introduced.

However it was in the 1900s that the sugarcane industry started in the Dominican Republic with United States acting as a catalyst for developing it. In 1905 the DR was controlled by the United States under the Big Stick policy of Roosevelt. In 1915, Haiti was invaded by troops from America. Political stability was established in the island after the occupation of United States.

This is a city you will find in the Nord region of Haiti, in the Saint-Raphael Arrondissement. Around 29,327 people inhabit it.

Pignon is naturally well protected town against possible tornadoes and tropical storms that are frequent in the area. It is situated in a valley that is safeguarded by gigantic mountains.

Jean Guillaume de Pignon, a French tradesmen and a plantation owner founded this beautiful town of Pignon in 1699. He settled his family in the village at the foot of the mountains, shortly after the Treaty of Ryswick was signed with Spain.

La Victoire is located in Haiti's Nord Department at an altitude of 1417 above the level of the sea. In the Saint-Raphael Arrondissement, it is a municipality. It is inhabited by around 6421 people.

Getting To This Beautiful Destination
This is a mountainous region in Haiti. The town is beautifully surrounded by hills and steep valleys. Small rivers and streams flow at the bottom of these valleys. Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake and people in significant numbers fled to La Victoire town taking a toll on its scarce resources.

Trou-du-Nord is a cityship, capital of the Trou-du-Nord Arrondissement, and part of Nord Est Department. It lies in the northeast region of Haiti, with a population of 37,405 residents living in three sub-divisions, Garcin, Roucou and Roche-Plate.

The education system has a smattering of primary and secondary schools, whose students need sponsorships to pay tuition and school supplies. The primary organization offering sponsorships is the L'eglise Baptiste Trou-du-Nord Church, funding the education of 300 schoolchildren at its eponymous school.

The most pressing health challenge in Trou-du-Nord is the presence of malaria that is everywhere. The American Red Cross has a distribution program, whereby it hands out bed-nets to child-bearing women and young children. The program has been an enormous success, lowering the cases of the lethal illness significantly.

Quartier-Morin is located in Haiti's Nord Department. In Haiti's northern peninsula, it is a small town. In the Cap-Haitien Arrondissement, it is a municipality having around 24,000 inhabitants. De Quartier Morin and Quartier Morin Ville are the other names used for Quartier-Morin.

The 2010 Disputed Elections

There was a violent protest during the disputed elections that took place in the year 2010. Quartier-Morin hit the news when United Nation peacekeepers shot down one of the demonstrators.

From Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti one has to travel eighty miles to get to Quartier-Morin. It is located at 19.687655 latitude and -72.162345 longitude. Morne-Pele and Basse Plaine are the two sections into which the municipality is divided.
