American Airlines, the first major air carrier to offer commercial jet service to Cap-Haitien

Thursday, October 2, 2014, a Boeing 757 aircraft landed, carrying the Republic's President, Michel Martelly, who flew to Miami the night before to board the historic flight 1462 back. The crew of the aircraft was greeted upon arrival with a grand ceremony attended also by the country's Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, Tourism Minister Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin, Venezuelan Ambassador to Haiti Pedro Antonio Canino González, Secretary of State for Public Works Philippe Cineas, and Minister of Public Works Jacques Rousseau.

This event, and in fact, the reopening of the Hugo Chavez International Airport, which has been renovated and was equipped with an 8,500-foot long by 138-foot wide runway, acts as a portent for Haiti's potentially bright socioeconomic future. The possibility for additional international airlines making the trip to Cap-Haitien following the example set by American Airlines means that the tourism market will open up for the city which has seen a large injection of capital from the hopeful government in preparation for just such a future.
