Haiti Accord with Convention on Biological Diversity to Improve and Maintain Natural Resources

Haiti ranks second in natural-resource differentiation with over 30% flora and 75% vertebrates native and omnipresent on the island. Despite these impressive statistics, its tree-canopy coverage has been severely depleted, with only 1.5% of Haiti's landmass blanketed.

In response to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) that demands adherence to ethical standards, the World Bank has funded a government of Haiti (GOH) initiative to develop sustainability of threatened indigenous species. They have indicated five important hubs of actualization to preserve and / or improve present conditions affecting biodiversity eco-systems. They include:

1. education on local habitat preservation
2. promotion of eco-tourism for preservation efforts and investment opportunities
3. conservation of woodlands and agriculture viability
4. monitoring of foreign flora and fauna to avert further degradation of indigenous natural resources
5. mobilization of legal, legislative, and regulatory entities to oversee challenges to biodiversity initiatives

An accord with the CBD needs ratification by the GOH to conform to international standards of biodiversity conservationism.
