Martelly Appointee Absconds with $3 Million in Cash

Claude Raymond Jr., succeeded in losing Martelly's confidence almost immediately. Not long after his installation, he was detained by Dominican Republic police with a $3 million dollar stash, concealed in an envelope. Someone in the OIE had secret information about the embezzlement, and reported it to the Senate. Senator François Anick ordered an inspection of all briefcases conducted, passing between the borders of Caribbean countries.
Martelly, wanting to clean house of government officials, who had been appointed during the Préval administration, replaced former Director General of OIE, Colonel Roland Chavannes, with Claude Raymond Jr. The irony is Chavannes had a pristine reputation as a man of dignity and worth. Political observers have said Martelly has wanted more neo-Duvalierists in his government, because they helped him win the presidency. He certainly made an indiscriminate choice with Raymond Jr.
Claude Raymond Jr. fleeing with government money has renewed Senator Anick's attacks on the Martelly government he claims has permitted sale of diplomatic passports to corrupt individuals. They typically use the passports for diplomatic perks, such as access to VIP lounges at airports.
