Miami police to use high-tech cameras to fight crime in little Haiti

This complicated plan by the city police is expected to allow them to be able to watch about 200 closed-circuit television screens at once from a new high-tech command centre. In this program, there will be 25 high-definition, 55-inch television sets which will be fed by up to 400 cameras placed around the town, including Little Haiti.

There will be five servers which will be the heartbeat of the system and have the ability to take feeds from up to 2,500 cameras at a time. This is a plan to get hold of criminals. However, it has come under criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, which is questioning the measures which have been put in place to ensure that people's privacy is protected. It suggests that proper protocols be put in place to ensure that the system is not abused in any way.

This technology first came to Miami in early 2013. It was proposed and pushed by Commissioner Francis Suarez who, by then, was running for the mayoral seat in the city.
