Samuel Madistin & Mirlande Manigat Want To Head MOPOD

A political coalition that turned into a political party, the Popular Patriotic Dessalinien Movement (MOPOD), has announced two of its important nominations for the upcoming election, in the last week of March. On Wednesday, March 25, the party announced the intention of Samuel Madistin, a newcomer to the party to seek party's nomination and on Friday, March 27, there was another announcement for the former First Lady Mirlande H. Manigat (during February 7, 1988 - June 20, 1988). On March 26, 2015, the Patriotic Movement of the Democratic Opposition (MOPOD), a coalition of opposition political parties, changed its name to "the Popular Patriotic Dessalinien Movement" while maintaining its earlier acronym MOPOD to reflect a change from an opposition struggle to an opposition movement. Earlier, the coalition had led many opposition protests and even the present Prime Minister Evans Paul was once a member of the group.

Samuel Madistin is a lawyer, a well known name or his advocacy against several human rights abuses, and support for his democracy and freedom of the press. His announcement for association with MOPOD was a matter of surprise to many; he has clarified his stand with a descriptive "944 word open letter" to MOPOD mentioning his vision and program for Haiti. First Lady Manigat endorsed her intention for nomination in the primaries with the explanation that, the purpose, program and ideology of MOPOD is not about slogans, it is about real programs. Ms. Manigat has a long political career in Haitian politics. She was a candidate for Haitian Presidential election (2010-11) against the winning candidate Michel Martelly and she amassed the most votes in the first round of elections (with final count: Popular Vote 336,747 at 31.74%). On March 27, 2015, in a meeting of several members of MOPOD, Former Senator Turneb Delpe has mentioned that this alliance is based on a shared ideology, not a fusion of its constituent members like Liberals, Christan Democrats, Nationalists or Socialists. All these divergences can be described in one simple name-- Jean Jacques Dessalines [Dessalinien] ideology. It is an engagement to move in a cohesive way.
