Haitian supporters of the Brazilian football team for World Cup

Despite the fact that Haitians have only participated in the World Cup once, in 1940, the country had already been in football fever even before it kicked off in Brazil. The country has been devastation and the majority of the population still languish in poverty, but this has been kept aside by upcoming football extravaganza.

This fever can well be observed in different ways in the capital,Port-au-Prince. Haitian supporters of the Brazilian football team. One can see different flags of the participating teams in the tournament being peddled by vendors in different shapes and sizes along the streets.

As far as support is concerned, the majority of the people here seem to support Brazil. However, a couple of fans also support Argentina, Italy and Germany in the forthcoming World Cup.

Some people, at the same time, see the World Cup fever as a cheap way of trying to forget the poverty levels in the country. It is also criticized as a temporary method to forget the daily struggles that the Haitians have to undergo, also the political strife, as well as the loss of thousands of lives in the 2010 earthquake.

This event can still not be forgotten since even now there are so many Haitians who are living in makeshifts camps they call home. More so are the common disagreements among political players which have been one of the obstacles of the reconstruction process.

It was only recently that many took to the street to demand the resignation of the Haitian President, Michel Martelly, and now on to the new elections.
