Frager is the southwest region's biggest employer, supplying work for 25,000 peasant families. They grow and harvest vetiver, an ingredient in European perfumes. They sell their harvests to Frager, who has plant workers draw out its essential oil and prepare it to ship to Europe.
Although no one died or was injured, the fire has affected the southwest area's economy, Frager being the main driver of it. Frager is the primary producer and exporter of vetiver oil globally, its production output nearly two-thirds of the island's production.
Frager's owner, Pierre Leger, born and reared in Les Cayes, majored in agronomy in Europe, returning to Les Cayes to contribute to its economy. Leger's commitment to the southwest area has included championing the building of a privately-owned port and airport to encourage more development in the region.
Leger told the media that after the fire, he has received an overwhelming response from his fellow Haitians and the Diaspora. He offered ". . . a special thanks to all (who) came . . . from Les Cayes and Port-au-Prince to offer their services free of charge . . ."
Leger says he will see to it plant operations open as soon as possible for the benefit of Les Cayes, the region, and vetiver growers.
