One big setback for the lawyers seeking justice and compensations for the victims of cholera in Haiti. Federal judge in Manhattan, Judge J. Paul Oetken, has decided to go with the argument presented by the lawyers of the United Nations which is that the United Nations is immune from any lawsuit because of treaties.

It can only happen in a few countries in the world and Haiti unfortunately is one of them. The U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon received hero's welcome in Haiti, despite causing over 8000 deaths, thousands orphans, widows and much more suffering among the Haitian population.

Due to his negligence, the cholera epidemic is now with the Haitian population and it will take a monumental effort to get ride of it. We can thank the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for that.

There have been many survivors of the Cholera epidemic who are currently struggling; children without parents, fathers and mothers without children, husbands and a wives without partners. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon believes that he owes them nothing for their suffering.

In the wake of Haiti's devastating 2010 quake, a widespread cholera epidemic broke out on the island. To date 682,753 cases have been recorded. The source of the virus has been traced back to Nepali soldiers, part of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti for over a decade.

The Nepalese Army refutes the charges, saying their soldiers are routinely vaccinated before being deployed overseas. But Yale Law School's Global Health Justice Partnership (GHJP), in a released 2013 report, states ". . . the cholera strain in Haiti has been scientically linked to a single origin in Nepal." The GHJP report wants the UN, who should have made certain soldiers were vaccinated, make a public apology to the Haitian population, who have suffered the terrible effects of the deadly virus.

According to UN Peacekeeping Deputy Edmond Mulet, the Cholera epidemic that has spread in Haiti is the result of Haiti Underdevelopment and this is what should be blamed. I can't help but to think about something similar that use to happen with women who have been raped. Women were blamed for wearing something too sexy or too tight.

Human rights lawyers have filed law suit in a U.S Federal Court accusing United Nation for misconduct and gross negligence on behalf of the cholera victims in Haiti in 2010. They claimed that the reckless behavior of U.N was responsible for the cholera outbreak because several scientific and medical investigation reports have concluded that one of the most likely sources of the outbreak was leaking sewage system from a Nepalese peacekeepers complex in UN housing. There is no other acceptable explanation how the disease that was present only in the northeastern region of the Indian subcontinent 9,000 miles away, traveled to Haiti.

Things are not getting any better in term of the cholera outbreak. After Haiti, Dominican republic and Cuba, this time Mexico seems to be next winner of the cholera epidemic awarded by the United Nations.

There is a warning from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) that the Cholera illness could spread worldwide.

As you know, investigations have revealed that the origin of the outbreak of cholera in Haiti to leaking sewage at a camp for UN soldiers from Nepal. Supporters of the victims have tried to sue the UN, so far: "Nad marinad". This year, representative from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said "petition for compensation was "not receivable" under a 1947 convention which grants the UN immunity for its actions.

In a bold move, Haitian Prime Minister Lamothe took the UN to task regarding its culpability in the outbreak of cholera in Haiti, following the 2010 earthquake. He cited the statistics of nearly 9,000 Haitians, who lost their lives to cholera, with another 600,000 or more critically ill.

He made his appearance before the UN General Assembly to specifically confront the issue and ask the UN to step up its efforts to help Haiti stamp out "the world's worst cholera outbreak". To his credit, Lamothe made a proposal to create a joint commission to investigate the methods and applications that would absolutely end the epidemic for good.

After a widely criticized decision made by the United Nations to invoke its immunity after a suit filed in the wake of the 2010 Cholera outbreak in Haiti, that has caused the deaths of over 8,000 Haitians, some say the most disappointing thing is the brevity of the official dismissal. The invocation of the UN's right to legal protection within a country in which it operates was a one-sentence cap to three years of illness and death, including the 15-month effort to gain compensation for those affected by the outbreak said to have been caused by UN peacekeepers from Nepal who entered the country after the January 2010 earthquake to offer aid to victims.

The United Nations has formally declared that that they will not compensate any victim of the cholera outbreak in Haiti. The UN has invoked its legal immunity to rebuff claims from attorneys for over 8,000 people killed by the Cholera outbreak, under section 29 of the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the UN.

The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon contacted the Haitian President Michel Martelly to inform him that the UN was not willing to compensate any of the claimants. He issued a diplomatic statement where he did not either accept or deny liability for the Cholera epidemic. However, he was direct in rejecting any possible compensation to any of the victims or families of the victims.

Cholera has been Haiti's worst health problem for the past few years. From 2010 to the present, there has been a series of outbreaks of this contagious, deadly disease, claiming the lives of about 8,000 Haitians and hospitalizing thousands of men, women, and children. With the country's health care insufficient for its people and in poor conditions and without immediate action, the outbreak could get worse in the next few years to come.

To address Haiti's cholera and health care problem, the United Nations, who has been very active in helping out the country since the 2010 earthquake, delegated the Doctor Paul Farmer from the United States as the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon's special advisor for Community Based Medicine and Lessons on Haiti last December. Several of Farmer's duties are to assist in building support for the fight against cholera in the country and give advice and education on the different medical techniques and alternatives that could be utilized and applied in Haiti and other affected places.
