UN Needs to Apologize for Bringing Cholera to Haiti, Dr Ralph Gonsalves

Prime minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said there is no longer any scientific dispute. It is a fact that the UN was responsible for the outbreak which has killed more than 8,000 people and infected more than 600,000 Haitians. He will request Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to acknowledge unconditional apology for UN role in this tragedy and to take immediate steps to compensate the victims and their families. Anything less will further undermine the credibility and moral authority of the institution. In his long speech he further criticized the role of UN and other similar organizations to protect vulnerable countries like Saint Vincent and the Grenadines which have become victims of global warming.
Earlier this year, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon turned down the compensation claims and said U.N has legal immunity according to an international convention. Meanwhile, Boston-based Institute for Justice and Development in Haiti has demanded financial compensation for the 8,300 Haitians who died of this epidemic and reparation for 650,000 more survivors of the illness.
